An ecology story that’s anything but a waste.
T PARK is a state of the art waste-to-energy sludge incineration facility located in the North West New Territories of Hong Kong. Veolia contacted MET for assistance in developing the interactive visitor experience, with a brief to help communicate the sustainable features of the facility, as well as Hong’s Kong’s waste management strategy developed by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD).
MET’s work included the design of the interior and interactives for the reception, a rest space with sustainable interpretation outside the theatre, the main 300sqm exhibition space and the large process viewing hall.
Project challenges included interpretation for large visitor groups, the technical subject matter, concealment of many of the processes and the need to design a sustainable solution to match the environmental protection theme of the facility. To meet these challenges, MET designed a visitor experience with nodal focused interpretation and guide lead interaction to facilitate layered learning and group participation.
Each exhibit in the main exhibition space tells a unique story when activated, in a way that supports the guides storytelling. The strategy of nodal, focused interpretation was a response to the needs to minimise material and energy consumption, while maximising value, flexibility and impact.
Recycled and renewable materials were used extensively on the project, along with a clean and bright aesthetic to encourage public involvement in the facility and the Government’s waste management strategy. Large Augmented Reality animations and one-to-one models were added in the viewing gallery area to reveal otherwise hidden processes.
The project was developed in collaboration with EPD, operator and main contractor Veolia, their joint venture partners Leighton and John Holland, our production partners Hypsos, software developers Yu+Co LAB and Symmetry, interpretation specialists Winkle-Picker, lighting designers Picture Planes and AV hardware consultants Dinotech.
